ENGINEERING

I am a chartered Mechanical Engineer and Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Energy Institute, and Institute of Acoustics. I have a MEng degree and PhD from the University of Sheffield, specialising in the hydrodynamic interactions of Tidal Stream Turbines.

I have industrial experience in a large building consultancy, particularly on air and wind modelling, renewable energy integration and regulation compliance. I have completed post-doctoral research on experimental and computational fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, acoustics, Life Cycle Assessment, and other stuff.

I have presented at large international conferences, published peer-reviewed journal articles, magazine pieces, blog posts and been interviewed on BBC radio. I was awarded an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship and twice won funding through the EU FP7 "Marinet" fund for marine renewable testing. In August 2019 I started work at the Grantham Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Sheffield. My focus is Life Cycle Assessment of plastics, bioplastics and alternatives to single-use plastic.

I am passionate about using engineering as a force for good to counteract the damage done by the human species. The planet doesn't need saving, but we and the other creatures we've screwed it up for could do with a hand.

RUNNING

I compete mostly in ultra distance off road races for Team Accelerate-Scott. I am coached by Stuart Hale and supported by Accelerate UK and Scott Running. I also run for Dark Peak Fell Runners, and am a UKA qualified Run Leader.

I have achieved a few race wins including the 3 Peaks Yacht Race, the Long Tour of Bradwell and the Snowdonia Trail Marathon. I have raced all over the UK, in the Alps and at amazing events in stunning places like Japan and Costa Rica.

I like a challenge, and in 2012 I set a record for running across the Alps solo and unsupported, covering about 1100 miles from Vienna, through Austria, Germany, Leichenstein, Switzerland, Italy and France to finish in Nice. The "Big Alps Run" raised thousands of pounds for the charity Water for Kids.

I write about my running on my blog, which can be found at www.challengestu.com

CHARITY

Litter kills thousands of animals every year, either directly through entanglement, strangulation or starvation, or indirectly through watercourse pollution.

I founded Runners against Rubbish in 2016 after becoming frustrated and embarrased at the amount of rubbish I started to see on the hills. None of it should be there, but as a runner I value the solitude and nature of a long run in the hills, so seeing rubbish clearly left by other runners grated particuarly harshly.

We now have over 200 members, mostly in the UK but the odd one as far afield as Australia. We encourage members to sign up and pledge to pick up a bit of rubbish whenever possible while out running, and have been featured on BBC radio and online, ITV, and local and national newspapers.

We join litterpicking events with other groups in Sheffield, and have organised a number of successful events on our own. In 2018 we covered the entire length of the South West Coast Path (620 miles) as a relay with over 40 participants, collecting 90 bags of rubbish. I have also recently started working with brands like Lucozade to try to reduce the amount of their products that end up as litter.

So, the next time you need a UK Athletics qualified, MATLAB-literate engineer to use laser or acoustic doppler techniques to understand the fluid dynamics of the flows of litter around your proposed tidal turbine installation, then present the results to a large audience, to a tight deadline and without using a drop of fossil fuel to get there, I'm your man.

That's it. Now get some sleep.
